Dr. Bill Johnson honored with 2026 Excellence in Healthcare Award

William “Bill” Johnson, DO, was named the 2025 recipient of the Parkland Health Center Foundation’s Excellence in Healthcare Award for outstanding contributions to the Parkland region’s health care. The honor was announced during the annual PHC Foundation Gala and Awards Ceremony on March 7.

The Excellence in Healthcare Award is presented annually to a healthcare professional who demonstrates a commitment to improving care through leadership, community focus, and collaboration. Johnson was recognized for his dedication to the people of St. Francois County. For more than forty years, he has provided exceptional care with compassion, humility, and unwavering professionalism.

After completing medical school, Dr. Johnson made the meaningful decision to return to his hometown to practice medicine—a decision that speaks volumes about his dedication to our community. As a board-certified family practice physician, Dr. Johnson’s career has spanned the full continuum of care. Early in his practice, he delivered more than 3,000 babies, sharing in some of the most joyful moments in the lives of countless families. He also provided comprehensive inpatient care, including the management of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit. In the later years of his career, he has continued to serve with the same commitment by caring for hospice patients, ensuring dignity, comfort, and compassion at the end of life.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Johnson has made a lasting impact through his leadership in public health. For many years, he has served as medical director of the St. Francois County Health Department, guiding public health initiatives and advancing community well-being for nearly three decades. His leadership has strengthened the health of our community in ways that extend far beyond the walls of any clinic or hospital.

Dr. Johnson has also served Parkland Health Center with distinction, contributing his time and expertise on numerous committees, including the Credentials Committee and the Medical Executive Committee. His leadership has consistently reflected integrity, sound judgment, and a deep commitment to the medical profession.

Perhaps most importantly, Dr. Johnson has always placed patients at the center of his work. He is known for making patients feel safe, valued, and understood—taking the time to explain complex conditions clearly and offering reassurance and support when it is most needed. Many patients credit his compassion and presence as an important part of their healing.

Dr. Johnson’s career exemplifies what it means to be a trusted physician, a dedicated leader, and a tireless advocate for community health. His decades of service and unwavering commitment make him exceptionally deserving of this honor.
